OpenVPN Connect is the “official” application of OpenVPN Inc. and is designed to be more user-friendly VPN users with minimal technical expertise. This means that it is less featured than openvpn for android which is geared towards more advanced OpenVPN users.

Openvpn for Android is a no-cost and open source client created by Arne Schwabe that allows you to connect to any VPN service that is compatible with the OpenVPN protocol. If your device doesn’t support the pre-configured VPN apps available in the Google Play Store, this is an excellent alternative. The setup is pretty straightforward. You will need to import the VPN profile files. (The configuration files are named.ovpn). They can be downloaded from the provider’s site or by contacting live chat support.

After you’ve created your profile, tap on the server to connect. Once connected, your Internet traffic is directed via a secure channel to the server that you have selected in the app. The Status tab allows you to examine your connection’s information and the status. A kill switch is always turned on by default and will disable your Internet connections when the VPN tunnel drops.

The app also has per-app VPN as well as an all-day-long feature that automatically activates the VPN connection whenever the app is used and will continue to work even after your device goes to sleep or switches networks. This feature, however, requires Android 7.0 or higher and can drain your battery more than usual.
