Bootable rescue disks are helpful when malware stops you from running normal antivirus software. These disks allow you to scan your PC without Windows and usually find the files that antivirus software may ignore. Some can even scan the Master Boot Record (MBR) of the hard drive, a feature that’s particularly useful for eradicating stubborn or difficult-to-clean-up threats.

These bootable programs have a text-based interface. They do however, provide options for customization, so you can select to scan only certain types of files or folders, or even specific size files. The best among these tools feature a graphic interface and support for more advanced threats, like rootkits, and other varieties of ransomware.

AVG Rescue CD, with its simple but robust GUI, and many scanning options, is a good example. It is also one of few programs that perform an entire MBR scanning which is typically impossible with a non-bootable application. However it’s not the quickest on this list and its text-only interface isn’t for all users.

Kaspersky Rescue Disk is another top option that is fast, has a well-designed UI and supports more advanced viruses. It comes with features that you’ll rarely see in other bootable antivirus tools that include the ability to scan boot sectors and hidden startup objects, as well as fileless files and the entire hard drive. You can also exclude files to speed up the time spent on scanning. In our tests, it detected all malware samples we had sent it, including some that evaded detection by other antivirus programs.
